The Artist
Zahra Hoccom is a British contemporary artist working across drawing, printmaking & design. Her work explores queerness, grief, internalised homophobia, and emotional absence, shaped by her experiences as a neurodiverse lesbian woman.
Now based in Bristol, Hoccom draws inspiration from the city’s vibrant urban art scene, which influences the energy and immediacy of her recent contour line portraits, created using fine liner pens and pencil. These works explore fragility, identity, and the quiet intensity found in everyday expressions and bodily presence.
Her earlier project, The Veil Series (2017–2019), posed the question: Can death ever truly be felt from a piece of art by the viewer? Rooted in personal loss, the series evolved from photography into printmaking, using a garment worn by her grandmother to explore themes of mourning, concealment, and memory.
Across her practice, Hoccom’s work is intimate, emotionally charged, and grounded in lived experience — offering reflections on identity, loss, and the things we carry but do not always reveal.
